Book Movie
Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre was a book and a movie that I had never heard about before. I just started reading it and it is really good so far. It surprised me how I could know nothing about a book and then come out knowing everything about it. When I watched the movie I thought about how different the book and the movie were. I wondered what critics said about them, which one they thought expressed the plot better. A good example in the book and movie that shows the similarities and differences is how in the book Jane is called and described as a “plain Jane”. In the movie she is portrayed as such but isn’t described or ever mentioned as a “plain Jane”. Even though the director of the movie uses most of the same dialogue from the book to make them as similar as possible, it really is nothing like the book because of the descriptions and of the important parts the director didn’t include in the movie. It changed the whole thing.
I didn’t think there were a lot of similarities between the book and the movie. The plot line is the same main idea. They are both about a young girl named Jane Eyre who has a hard childhood and when trying to grow up comes across a job of a governess. She ends up falling in love with her master, but little does she know about the dark secret that he is hiding. In the both the movie and the book Jane is described as plain Jane. There is nothing special about her. She is just plain. Her character in the movie looks exactly like the character described in the book. Another similarity is the setting. The scenes and setting mostly were the same. All the setting in the movie looked the way it was described in the book for the most part. That helped a lot because I could think back to the book and know what scene was going on.
There were a lot of differences between the book Jane Eyre and the movie Jane Eyre. In the book, the beginning is starting off as Jane being a child and living with her horrible Aunt Reed. But in the movie it starts off as Jane being a young adult and then it flashes back to when she was a kid and then it starts the story. In the movie there were a lot of flash backs used. Whenever she was thinking of her childhood the scene would change to go back to her as a child. There are no flashbacks in the book or any evidence of flashbacks in the book. The book had a lot of events that didn’t take place in the movie, like the book never mentions anything about kids at Lowood School (the school where Jane grew up) being whipped in they were bad, but in the movie there is a scene where they show the teachers whipping the students. The movie of Jane Eyre also leaves out an event in the book where Jane is a child and gets in trouble and gets put into the “red room”. While she is in there she sees a ghost. That event was never mentioned in the movie. One last thing that was extremely different from the movie and the book is that the descriptions of the characters were a lot fuller. The movie left out a lot of details of the characters. The details in the book made the book seem a lot more interesting than the movie.
My personal opinion of the book and the movie was that the book was better. I think the book was better because there was more detail in the book. You could get to know the characters better in the book because the author used such descriptive details. In the movie the director didn’t try and describe the characters as well as the book had. Also the movie left out some parts of the book that I thought were really important. For example the movie took out a part of the book where Jane thinks she has a “dream” before she is too get married and the “dream” was of a scary looking woman who rips up her veil. I think this was an important part of the story because this is the first time Jane even sees the mad women and it makes her suspect something. Since they took out that event in the story there was no set up for what was to come. It made me feel like it didn’t belong there then. That was supposed to be a big main point in the story but when they took that dream out, it made that scene boring and seem not as interesting.
I noticed that this book and movie had a lot more differences than similarities. I still enjoyed this book and movie but overall the book was a lot better. The descriptions had a big impact on what I thought. Since not a lot of descriptions were used in the movie it wasn’t as interesting. I’m glad that I chose this book still because it showed me that books can be better than movies. A lot of the times I wouldn’t bother reading the book. I would just go and watch the movie. But reading the book first, in this case leads me to believe that maybe I should read the book first because then you can compare it and see which one you liked better. Even though there were a lot of differences and not a lot of similarities in the book and movie, I think that’s what made it so interesting. I got to see what in the book the director of the movie thought was interesting and what was not. Thinking about the differences and comparisons of the book and movie made me look at them different than how I would if I was just reading it for no apparent reason. I think it was a good experience to read and watch the movie and compare them.
